# Porsche Cayenne 958.1 GTS Handbook

Buying, servicing and modifying a 2013-14 Porsche Cayenne GTS (958.1, 4.8 V8). By Tim Neilen. Researched 20/09/2026. Web version: https://tim.neilen.com.au/cayenne/

I'm hunting for a 2013-14 958.1 Cayenne GTS - the last of the naturally aspirated V8s - and I'd like to do most of the servicing myself. So I built an agent stack to do the homework: five research streams across forums, owner reports and Australian specialists, plus 40-odd YouTube videos read through their transcripts so I didn't have to sit through them all. Everything here links back to where it came from.

It was researched in September 2026, so it will date. It isn't advice - check part numbers against the car's VIN, and get any car you're serious about inspected.

## Which 958 Cayenne to buy: the verdict

The **2013–14 958.1 GTS** is the sweet spot: the last naturally aspirated V8, past the early-958 faults, and workable from the top.

### Why

- **4.8 V8 without turbos.** Plugs, coils, filters and fluids are driveway jobs; the 958.2's twin-turbo V6 is “buried”.
- **Clear of the early faults.** The cam-bolt failures stop at builds before 13/09/2011; bore scoring is rare on the 958 4.8.
- **Nothing GTS-specific fails.** Its weak points are shared with the S, so parts and know-how are everywhere.

### Alternatives

- **2013–14 958.1 S** (same V8) at around $37k is the value pick, and the difference buys a healthy repair fund. The GTS premium is desirability, not reliability.
- **MY16 958.2 GTS** ($48–55k) if the V8 isn't the point: faster and newer, but harder to service at home.

### Avoid

- **Hybrids** - a high-voltage battery runs A$20–26k.
- **Diesel** for a home mechanic - its big failures are engine-out jobs.
- **957s** unless MY09–10 with a clean borescope; **9Y0s** start well above 958 money.

### The one big risk

**The transfer case.** Twelve YouTube channels and every forum stream name it the 958's weak point. Change its fluid every 30,000–60,000 km, as owners and specialists do (Porsche's schedule says 240,000 km). It's a driveway job - torque the plugs carefully, the case is aluminium. Ask every seller when it was last done, and keep A$6–8k in reserve until the history is clear. And assume **air suspension**: Australian S and GTS cars came with it as standard.

## Before you buy a 958 Cayenne GTS

### paperwork

- **Oil services every 12 months or 15,000 km, with no stretched intervals.** Service history matters more than mileage; stretched oil intervals are a red flag.
- **Spark plugs done every 45,000 km or 4 years.** Worn plugs and coils cause misfires around 100-130k km; plugs never done by 90k km is a red flag.
- **Evidence of transfer case, diff and ATF fluid changes.** Fluid changes prevent and often fix transfer case slipping; the factory 'lifetime' 240,000 km interval is too long.
- **Invoice for the revised thermostat housing (94810608002), water pump and aluminium pulley.** The glued pipe at the thermostat housing is the top coolant risk; the revised housing uses threaded pipes.
- **Any transfer case replacement, with invoice and part number.** A recent replacement with no invoice is a red flag; a documented replacement adds value.
- **Get the build option list by VIN from a Porsche Centre: air suspension, PDCC, PTV Plus, PCCB.** Each option changes running costs; PTV Plus cars see more rear diff noise, PDCC adds a hydraulic system.
- **Ask a Porsche Centre to run the VIN for open campaigns.** AU recall history includes a 2015 under-bonnet fuel leak recall on petrol models.
- **Confirm the engine is the 4.8 V8, especially on any MY15-plated car.** The July 2014 facelift (958.2) moved the S and GTS to a 3.6 twin-turbo V6.
- **On any 2011 S or Turbo, check the build date against 28/04/2010-13/09/2011 and whether the cam bolts were replaced.** Shearing VarioCam bolts can stall the engine and, in the worst case, need a new engine.

### scan

- **Read stored and pending codes: misfires, P0016-P0019 cam/crank correlation, P0171/P0174 lean, air suspension and transfer case faults.** Surfaces coil, PCV, timing and driveline faults the seller may not mention.
- **Watch ATF temperature behaviour with the scan tool.** The Aisin 8-speed needs correct fluid level and condition; temperature is read by scan tool.

### test drive

- **Engine starts easily and settles to a steady idle almost immediately.** CarsGuide's basic health check; rough idle can point to coils, plugs, PCV or carbon.
- **At full steering lock, accelerate hard and feel for hop or slip.** The standard test for a failing transfer case.
- **Feel for shudder at low speed and in turns, and RPM flare followed by a lurch between shifts.** Binding or slipping transfer case clutch pack.
- **Listen for harsh 2-3 upshifts and a clunky 5-4 downshift, and slurred shifts when warm.** Valve body issues, or the transfer case slipping.
- **Feel for thumping or vibration under the centre console on acceleration, or a whine that fades as it warms.** Failed driveshaft centre support bearing.

### under the car

- **If possible, see the car after it has been parked overnight and check for a sagging corner.** A corner dropping overnight is the typical air strut leak.
- **Look for coolant crust under the engine and at the rear crossover near the firewall.** Rear coolant fittings are a secondary leak point on the 958 V8.
- **Check the timing chain cover area and rear main seal for oil.** A timing cover leak is an engine-out reseal per Porsche's bulletin - walk away or price it in.
- **Inspect the driveshaft centre bearing rubber for cracks.** The rubber dry-rots at 10-15 years; the OEM part is a whole driveshaft.
- **Check disc lips and pad life; GTS front discs should be 360 mm; confirm any yellow (PCCB) calipers are genuine.** Brakes are a major running cost; painted calipers can pass off steel brakes as ceramic.
- **Look for off-road scars underneath and trolley or parking dents.** CarsGuide advises passing on cars that look off-roaded unless the price reflects it.

### engine bay

- **Sweet coolant smell when hot, crust at the front thermostat housing and under the intake, low reservoir level.** The glued thermostat housing pipe and plastic vent pipes are the top coolant failures.
- **Check the valve covers for oil and listen for a whistle at idle.** A whistle usually means the integrated PCV diaphragm has failed and the cover needs replacing.
- **Borescope a few cylinders.** Bore scoring is rare on the 4.8 but not zero; cheap insurance.

### cabin

- **Test every button and switch, and the PCM.** 958 electrics are sensitive to weak batteries; trim buttons crack.
- **Open every door from the outside handle, especially the rear passenger door.** Door lock actuators fail, rear passenger first.
- **Run the Bose audio and listen for dropouts or a pop at start-up.** The Bose amplifier in the boot is a common failure (~£900 UK).
- **Check the front footwells and carpets for damp or a musty smell.** Blocked sunroof drains flood the footwells, where control modules sit.
- **Cycle every ride height level, time the compressor and watch for chassis warnings.** Slow raising or warnings point to leaking struts or a tired compressor.
- **Check the rear seats for kick damage and the trim for cracks and rattles.** Signs of rough family use; trim is fragile.

### Ask the seller

- **Can I see the full service history - who did each service, and at what intervals?** Service history matters more than mileage; dealer-to-independent jumps with gaps are a red flag.
- **Has the thermostat housing been replaced with the revised threaded version, and when were the water pump and pulley done?** The glued coolant pipe is the top engine-bay risk; a documented fix is worth money.
- **Has the transfer case ever been replaced, or its fluid changed? Do you have the invoice and part number?** The transfer case is the biggest driveline risk; fluid changes are the main prevention.
- **When were the spark plugs and coils last done?** Plugs are due every 45,000 km; plugs and coils are a likely 100-130k km job.
- **Have the ATF and diff fluids ever been changed?** The factory says 240,000 km; owners change them much earlier.
- **Does it ever need coolant or oil topped up between services?** Coolant top-ups without a documented repair point to a slow leak.
- **Has any air suspension work been done - struts, compressor or 'no fault found' visits?** Air suspension is standard on AU V8s and a major cost at this mileage.
- **Has any oil leak been noted at a service, especially at the timing chain cover?** A timing cover leak is an engine-out reseal.
- **How old is the battery?** Weak batteries cause electrical faults on the 958.
- **Which options does it have - air suspension, PTV Plus, PDCC, ceramic brakes?** Each changes running costs and what can fail.
- **Has there ever been water in the footwells, or have the sunroof drains been cleared?** Flooded footwells can kill control modules.
- **Has recall work been done?** Confirms open campaigns such as the petrol fuel-leak recall have been closed.
- **Has the car been used off-road?** CarsGuide advises passing on off-roaded cars unless priced accordingly.
- **Is there a known fault or reason behind the asking price?** A car priced well below similar ones (e.g. the $44,500 WA GTS) needs an explanation before it's a bargain.

## 958 Cayenne GTS factory options and option codes

### How to find a car's options

- **The option sticker.** On earlier Cayennes the list of three-character option codes is printed on a sticker in the service book and on another under the boot floor near the spare wheel. On 958s it's hit and miss - some owners report the service book only carries a black label with the VIN and engine code - so lift the boot floor and look. ([6speedonline.com](https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/cayenne-955-957/182566-options-sticker-location.html), [6speedonline.com](https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/cayenne-958/351737-does-958-have-options-codes-sticker.html), [pelicanparts.com](https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche-Cayenne/73-BODY-Identifying_Option_Codes/73-BODY-Identifying_Option_Codes.htm))
- **A Porsche Centre printout.** Give any Porsche Centre or independent specialist with PIWIS the VIN and ask for the factory equipment list. It's the most reliable source outside the US. ([rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1504196-how-to-tell-if-a-cayenne-has-pdcc-ptv.html), [pistonheads.com](https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=1983520))
- **Porsche Production Specification.** Porsche's online vehicle documentation service sells a Production Specification with the original options, colours and build date for US$150. Porsche says it covers all VINs, but it's run by Porsche Cars North America, so check it will issue one for a non-US car before paying. The Classic Technical Certificate doesn't cover the 958 - only the first-generation Cayenne. ([newsroom.porsche.com](https://newsroom.porsche.com/en_US/2022/technology/porsche-vehicle-documentation-online-service-30039.html))
- **VIN build-sheet sites.** vinanalytics.com returns a full option list for many Cayennes with a free account. Packages hide their contents - a Turbo S includes PDCC and PTV Plus without listing them - so read the list against the sales brochure for that model year. ([rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1504196-how-to-tell-if-a-cayenne-has-pdcc-ptv.html))
- **Physical tells.** Sport Chrono has a stopwatch on top of the dash. PCCB has yellow calipers - check they're genuine, not painted. ([stuttcars.com](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-cayenne-gts-2013-2014/), [pistonheads.com](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/porsche-cayenne-958--ph-used-buying-guide/42634))

### 958.1 option codes

| Code | Option | What it is and why it matters | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1BK | Air suspension with PASM - GTS: standard in Australia, optional elsewhere | Three-chamber air springs with adaptive dampers and five ride heights. Standard on Australian-delivered S and GTS cars; optional on the GTS elsewhere. Air strut leaks and compressor burn-out are the running cost to budget for. | [911uk.com](https://911uk.com/porsche/cayenne-panamera-build-option-codes.57869/), [carsguide.com.au](https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/porsche-cayenne-gts-2012-review-71910), [stuttcars.com](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-cayenne-gts-2013-2014/) |
| 1BH / 1BZ | PASM on steel springs - GTS: standard outside Australia | Adaptive dampers on steel springs - the GTS's global standard set-up, 24 mm lower than an S. Both codes are listed as PASM; which one a given car shows varies. A steel-spring GTS avoids air-suspension repairs but is rare in Australia. | [911uk.com](https://911uk.com/porsche/cayenne-panamera-build-option-codes.57869/), [stuttcars.com](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-cayenne-gts-2013-2014/) |

## Known faults on the 958 Cayenne GTS

958.1 GTS and S, 4.8 V8 - what fails, what it costs, and who fixes it. Most likely first.

### Glued aluminium coolant pipe lets go at the thermostat housing

- Likelihood: Likely. DIY: DIY with care. System: cooling.
- Symptoms: Coolant smell when hot, puddles under the engine, sudden coolant loss (one owner heard a 'pop'), rising engine temperature.
- When: Any mileage - reports from under 10k to over 200k miles; several around 80-83k miles (~130k km); one 2013 GTS at 38k miles
- Cost: Dealer fix US$1,800-2,800. Parts ~US$310 (revised housing) + ~US$200 (thermostat); ~6 h book labour, intake manifold and injection rail off.
- Prevent it: Fit the revised threaded housing (94810608000 superseded by 94810608002) before it fails; ask whether it has been done.
- Evidence: widely reported. Sources: [Rennlist: 2011-2014 V8 coolant pipe glue](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1045931-2011-2014-v8-serious-issue-coolant-pipe-glue.html), [Rennlist: coolant pipe glue (page 8)](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1045931-2011-2014-v8-serious-issue-coolant-pipe-glue-8.html), [Carsales: buying a used Cayenne (2010-18)](https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/buying-a-used-porsche-cayenne-2010-18-145554/)

### Transfer case clutch pack binds or slips

- Likelihood: Likely. DIY: Specialist. System: drivetrain.
- Symptoms: Jerky shifts in low gears under power (binding); brief RPM flare then a lurch on shifts (slipping); shudder at low speed and in turns; hop or slip when accelerating hard at full steering lock.
- When: Binding failures under ~30k miles; slipping failures over ~50k miles (~80k km). One 2011 S had cases at 14.9k, 71k, 83k and 107k miles.
- Cost: Reman ~US$2,400 incl. US$900 refundable core; ~US$6k dealer (one owner); UK specialist 'approach £3,000 including labour'. The US 10-year extended warranty has expired on every 2011-2014 car.
- Prevent it: Change the transfer case fluid every 25-30k km (owners do 15-20k miles) despite the factory 240,000 km interval; fluid changes 'have fixed a LOT of them'.
- Evidence: widely reported. Sources: [Rennlist: transfer case - what actually fails](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1035471-transfer-case-what-actually-fails.html), [Rennlist: transfer case failure](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1290994-transfer-case-failure.html), [Rennlist: highest mileage 958](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1312383-highest-mileage-958-cayenne.html), [Sports Vehicle Performance (UK): 958 buyers guide](https://www.sportsvehicleperformance.co.uk/post/porsche-cayenne-958-buyers-guide), [PistonHeads: 958 used buying guide](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/porsche-cayenne-958--ph-used-buying-guide/42634)

### Air strut leaks and compressor burn-out (air is standard on Australian S and GTS)

- Likelihood: Likely. DIY: DIY with care. System: suspension.
- Symptoms: A corner sags overnight (usually the O-ring at the top of the air spring); compressor runs long; 'Chassis System Failure' or 'Regulation not permissible' warnings.
- When: One aggregator: 80-120k km, spreading corner to corner. One high-mileage GTS had all struts done at 150k miles.
- Cost: US: front strut ~US$1,320, rear ~US$1,257 (eEuroparts); Arnott new ~US$800, rebuilt OEM ~US$1,000 each; compressor part US$459; valve block ~US$367.
- Prevent it: Fix a leaking strut early so the compressor isn't over-worked. One experienced owner now prefers genuine Porsche struts over Arnott.
- Evidence: widely reported. ### Worn spark plugs and failing ignition coils

- Likelihood: Likely. DIY: DIY with care. System: engine.
- Symptoms: Misfires under acceleration, rough idle.
- When: 60,000-80,000 miles (~100-130k km)
- Cost: AU dealer plugs $760 (every 45,000 km / 4 years); plugs + coils US$600-1,200 at a shop.
- Prevent it: Plugs every 45,000 km or 4 years. Coil connectors go brittle and the aluminium coil bolts are one-use - finger tight only.
- Evidence: widely reported. Sources: [Exotic Car Hacks: 958 GTS/Turbo buyers guide](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/buyers-guides/porsche-cayenne-gts-turbo-second-generation-buyers-guide/), [Stuttcars: 2nd gen Cayenne buyers guide](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-buyers-guides/cayenne-2nd-gen-buyers-guide/), [Rennlist: V8 spark plug and coil DIY](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1310885-diy-video-spark-plugs-and-ignition-coils-v8-r-and-r.html), [Rennlist: maintenance after 100k km](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1430873-2014-cayenne-major-maintenance-items-and-high-chance-repairs-after-100k-km-81k-m.html), [Porsche Centre Doncaster: Cayenne service prices](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service)

### Heavy brake wear, and ABS/pad-wear sensor loom faults

- Likelihood: Likely. DIY: Easy DIY. System: suspension.
- Symptoms: Lipped discs, short pad life; brake/ABS warnings from damaged sensor looms that get misdiagnosed as worn pads. 958.1 GTS front discs are 360 mm (390 mm is the Turbo, and the GTS from 2016).
- Cost: UK specialist: '£500+ per axle; £1,000+ for a full set'. Brakes and tyres are the biggest running costs.
- Prevent it: Rear pads normally need no scan tool; rear rotors may need the scan tool's EPB service mode if the parking-brake drum has a lip.
- Evidence: widely reported. Sources: [Sports Vehicle Performance (UK): 958 buyers guide](https://www.sportsvehicleperformance.co.uk/post/porsche-cayenne-958-buyers-guide), [PistonHeads: 958 used buying guide](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/porsche-cayenne-958--ph-used-buying-guide/42634), [Rennlist: rear pads/rotors without a scanner](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1292329-is-it-impossible-to-diy-rear-pads-and-rotors-on-a-958-2-s-without-a-scanner.html), [Stuttcars: Cayenne GTS 2013-2014 specs](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-cayenne-gts-2013-2014/)

### Water pump seep and composite pulley failure

- Likelihood: Possible. DIY: DIY with care. System: cooling.
- Symptoms: Coolant seeping at the pulley or running down the timing case cover; a failed plastic pulley can take out the pump and belt.
- Cost: Parts: water pump 94810603301, V8 pulley 94810609101, thermostat 94810603401. Usually done with the thermostat housing job (dealer US$1,800-2,800 for that job).
- Prevent it: Replace the plastic pulley with an aluminium one whenever the pump is done - one owner's original pulley disintegrated ~500 miles after a new pump went in.
- Evidence: widely reported. Sources: [eEuroparts: 958 cooling system issues](https://eeuroparts.com/blog/porsche-cayenne-958-cooling-system-issues-explained), [Rennlist: 958 DIY water pump, t-stat, crossover, vent](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1137870-958-cayenne-diy-leaks-water-pump-t-stat-rear-crossover-cyl-head-vent.html)

### Plastic coolant vent (Y) pipe and breather line under the intake crack or leak

- Likelihood: Possible. DIY: DIY with care. System: cooling.
- Symptoms: Coolant leak under the intake manifold; pipe cracks near its fittings with age.
- When: Owners cite coolant pipe failures around 70,000 miles (~110k km)

- Likelihood: Possible. DIY: DIY with care. System: engine.
- Symptoms: Whistle at idle, lean codes (P0171/P0174), oil leak at the valve cover, rising oil consumption.
- Cost: Dealer quotes reportedly US$4-5k; one owner did the passenger-side cover and O-rings for under US$75 DIY. Porsche's fix is a whole new cover.
- Evidence: anecdotal. Sources: [Rennlist: valve covers leaking](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1208550-valve-covers-leaking-2015-s.html), [Rennlist: buying a high-mileage 958.1 GTS](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1523502-buying-a-high-mileage-958-1-gts.html), [Rennlist: maintenance after 100k km](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1430873-2014-cayenne-major-maintenance-items-and-high-chance-repairs-after-100k-km-81k-m.html)

## 958 Cayenne service schedule, fluids and torques

- **Jack mode.** Set Normal level with the ride-height rocker. With the ignition on, hold the rocker switch FORWARD for 10-15 seconds. Release it: a message appears on the instrument display and the car can now be raised. To switch levelling back on, hold the rocker forward for 10-15 seconds again, or just drive off. ([manualslib.com](https://www.manualslib.com/manual/2911568/Porsche-Cayenne-2011.html?page=199), [manualslib.com](https://www.manualslib.com/manual/2911568/Porsche-Cayenne-2011.html?page=281), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-change-engine-oil-filter-on-a-porsche-cayenne-v8-958/))
- **Jacking points.** Lift only at the four sill jacking points (the jack head must seat in the cut-out) or at the jacking points for a trolley jack or lifting platform. Never jack under the engine, transmission or axles. For jack stands, eCarGuides jacks at the front centre crossmember and at the rear crossmember just ahead of the rear diff, between the exhaust pipes, then puts the stands under the jacking points. The car must be level for the transfer case, diff and ATF levels. Never work under a car supported only by a jack. - **Brake size.** The brief assumed 390 mm front brakes. Porsche's MY14 brochure says the GTS has 360x36 mm front discs (390 mm is the Turbo). eCarGuides, Stuttcars and two Rennlist threads ('390 added to GTS for 2016 and up'; 'Red calipers on a GTS - 360mm') agree; eEuroparts disagrees. Measure the disc or check the VIN option list. - **Stands, always.** Jack mode stops the car levelling but doesn't lock it - one owner had an air spring deflate in jack mode.

### Service schedule

| Item | Every | Months | What owners do | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter (Annual Maintenance) | 15,000 km | 12 | Many owners change at 7,500-10,000 km or yearly, whichever comes first (eCarGuides recommends about 7,500 km). Reset the counter with the scan tool. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/canberra/en-AU/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-change-engine-oil-filter-on-a-porsche-cayenne-v8-958/), [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/) |

| Safety and maintenance inspection (brakes, tyres, steering and suspension joints, driveshaft, leaks, air suspension, underbody) | 15,000 km | 12 | Look closely at the thermostat-housing area and the water pump for coolant crust, and at the transfer case for weeping. | [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/) |
| Cabin (dust and pollen) filter | 30,000 km | 24 | It's a 15-minute DIY with no tools beyond Torx, so many owners change it more often. That habit isn't sourced. | [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-replace-cabin-air-filter-on-porsche-cayenne-958/), [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/) |
| Engine air filters (x2) | 120,000 km | 48 | PcarWise says to ignore the long interval and replace sooner (about 40,000 miles / 64,000 km). Replace earlier on dusty roads. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/canberra/en-AU/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-engine-air-filters-on-a-porsche-cayenne-958-s-gts-turbo-turbo-s/), [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/) |
| Spark plugs (x8) | 45,000 km | 48 | eCarGuides suggests replacing the coils at every second plug change. Coils typically fail at 80,000-100,000 km. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/canberra/en-AU/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-replace-spark-plugs-ignition-coils-a-porsche-cayenne-s-gts-958/) |
| Brake fluid | - | 24 | Bleed with a pressure bleeder. About 1.6 L flushes the whole system. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/canberra/en-AU/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/goldcoast/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-flush-brake-fluid-on-a-porsche-cayenne/), [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/) |
| Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and filter | 240,000 km | 192 | Owners and specialists do it far sooner: eCarGuides and PcarWise say 8 years / 80,000 miles (about 120,000 km). Some owners do two roughly 6 L drain-and-fills to refresh more of the fluid. Old fluid is linked to harsh shifts. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/canberra/en-AU/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-change-the-automatic-transmission-fluid-on-a-porsche-cayenne-958/), [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/), [rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/diy-cayenne/1018243-changing-atf-fluid.html) |
| Transfer case (PTM) fluid | 240,000 km | 192 | Owners and specialists use 30,000-60,000 km (Rennlist owners: every 15,000-20,000 miles; PcarWise: 40,000 miles; eCarGuides: 120,000 km). Why: the multi-plate clutch coupling wears its fluid, and fresh fluid often cures early binding, jerky shifts or slipping. A replacement case costs about US$2,300-4,000. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-change-transfer-case-oil-on-a-porsche-cayenne-958/), [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/), [rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1035471-transfer-case-what-actually-fails.html), [rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1184978-new-owner-and-highest-mile-gts-7.html) |
| Front and rear differential oil | 240,000 km | 192 | Owners change it every 30,000-60,000 km. One Rennlist owner found it 'totally black' only 20,000 miles after the last change. PTV Plus (locking rear) diffs are the ones prone to noise, and fresh fluid has cured some. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service), [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/canberra/en-AU/Cayenne-Service), [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-change-front-differential-oil-on-a-porsche-cayenne-2011-2018/), [rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1267928-psa-change-your-diff-fluid.html), [rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1184978-new-owner-and-highest-mile-gts-7.html) |
| Engine coolant | - | - | Porsche treats it as lifetime and dealers say top up only. Owners and eEuroparts suggest replacing it every 4-5 years, or about 100,000 km. It needs a vacuum fill. | [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/958-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/), [eeuroparts.com](https://eeuroparts.com/blog/porsche-coolant-guide-everything-you-need-to-know), [rennlist.com](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1297867-do-you-replace-coolant-in-cayenne-or-any-other-porsche.html) |

| Tyre sealant in the repair kit | - | 48 | Check the date on the bottle. | [dealer.porsche.com](https://dealer.porsche.com/au/doncaster/en-AU/Service/Service-Products-and-Pricing/Cayenne-Service) |
| Clear roof, sunroof and scuttle drains | - | 12 | Blocked drains flood the footwells, where control modules sit. Brisbane storm season makes this worth doing. | [ecarguides.com](https://ecarguides.com/maintenance-guides/how-to-inspect-clear-water-drain-ports-on-a-porsche-cayenne-955-957-958/) |

### Fluids and capacities

| System | Spec | Part | Capacity | Notes | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil (4.8 NA V8) | Porsche A40 approval. SAE 0W-40 for all temperatures; 5W-40 or 5W-50 above -25 °C. AU examples: Mobil 1 Triple Action 0W-40; Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 (its product page lists Porsche A40). | - | 9.0 L | 9.0 L with a filter change (8.5 L without) per the owner's manual; a 2013 GTS owner confirms '9.5 qts' (about 9.0 L). eCarGuides says 10 US qt (9.46 L). There is no dipstick: read the level in the cluster (Vehicle > Oil level). Fill about 8.5 L, run it warm, then top up in 0.25 L steps; one display segment is about 0.25 L. The min-max span is about 1.0 L per the manual, or about 1.4 L per eCarGuides. Buy 10 L. | Automatic transmission (Aisin 8-speed Tiptronic S) | Porsche ATF 958 300 540 00, the same fluid as VW G 055 540 A2 (the dealer confirmed the bottle is labelled G055 540 A2). FCP now lists Genuine Porsche 000 043 306 24 against that number, which is probably a supersession. Owners also use Febi 29934, Ravenol J1D2122 and Fuchs Titan 4400 as equivalents; these are owner-reported, not Porsche-approved. | 958 300 540 00 (G 055 540 A2) | 13.45 L | 13.45 L is the total factory fill (owner's manual, Cayenne S). A service changes far less: about 6 L from the drain plug and pan without opening the cooler lines (Rennlist); 7.4-9.0 L for a drain and filter change (eEuroparts); eCarGuides buys 10 L. Fill through the drain plug with adapter VAS 6262/2 (M10x1). Porsche procedure WM 370235: if the cooler lines were opened, warm the ATF to 100 °C to open the thermostat, then let it cool to about 35 °C. Engine at idle, A/C off, shift slowly P-R-N-D three times. The level is correct when ATF drips continuously from the overflow tube. eEuroparts gives a 35-45 °C window and eCarGuides 35-40 °C. Read ATF temperature with the scan tool; an IR gun reads about 6 °C off (Rennlist). | Transfer case (PTM multi-plate) | Porsche transfer case fluid 000 043 305 63, sold as an 850 ml bottle. eCarGuides uses Motul ATF VI and some owners use Ravenol; those are substitutes, not the Porsche specification. | 000 043 305 63 | 0.875 L | 0.875 L per the owner's manual; eCarGuides and Rennlist say about 0.78 L. The car must be level. Remove the FILL plug first, drain, then fill until it overflows. Two new plugs 955 301 115 01, which come with thread sealant. Buy 2 bottles: one 850 ml bottle is marginal for 0.875 L. The Diesel/Hybrid Torsen case uses a different fluid. | Front differential | 75W-90 gear oil. Owners say non-locking diffs take any synthetic 75W-90; eCarGuides uses Motul Gear 300 75W-90. Porsche's own front-diff part number was not confirmed. | - | 0.5 L | 0.5 L (owner's manual and eCarGuides). The level should sit 7 mm (±2) below the lower edge of the fill hole. The fill plug is hard to reach: use a stubby 8 mm hex and a low-profile ratchet. Two new plugs 955 332 057 00. The level should sit 6 mm (±2) below the fill hole. Two new plugs 955 332 057 00. | Rear differential (locking / PTV Plus, if fitted) | Porsche limited-slip 75W-90 with friction modifier. Part number conflict: Rennlist gives the latest number as 000 043 300 37, while FCP lists Genuine Porsche 000 043 305 03 '75W90 ... With Limited Slip Differential' for the same search. eCarGuides uses Motul Gear 300 LS 75W-90. | 000 043 300 37 or 000 043 305 03 (conflicting) | 1.3 L | 1.3 L (owner's manual and eCarGuides). If you just fill to overflow it takes only about 0.5 L. With the wheels off the ground, alternately spin them and add oil. One owner got 1.4 L in this way. | Engine coolant | Porsche antifreeze only (owner's manual). eEuroparts identifies it as the pink Si-OAT type (G12++, VW TL 774-G) for 2010+ Porsches; owners cite Zerex G40 as equivalent. Owners link to 000 043 301 05 and 000 043 305 75 (1 US gal). | 000 043 301 05 or 000 043 305 75 (owner-cited, unverified) | 19.5 L | 18.0-21.0 L depending on equipment (owner's manual, Cayenne S/Turbo); 19.5 is the midpoint. Mix 50/50 with distilled water for protection to -35 °C. Porsche: 'Cooling systems with thermal management ... must be vacuum-filled'. Use an Airlift/Schwaben-type vacuum filler; if bleeding manually, run the heater/defroster. ### Torque specs

| Fastener | Nm | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel bolts | 160 | 118 ft-lb, 19 mm socket. Clean the bolts and don't grease them; tighten in a criss-cross pattern with the car on the ground. |
| Engine oil drain plug (8 mm hex) | 50 | 37 ft-lb, with a new 18x24 mm sealing washer. |
| Oil filter housing cap (36 mm) | 25 | 19 ft-lb. Oil the new O-ring. |
| Spark plugs | 30 | 22 ft-lb. Cold engine only: the head is aluminium. Start each plug by hand. |
| Ignition coil hold-down bolts (aluminium, E-Torx) | - | Porsche lists them as one-time use. Owners tighten finger-tight; one owner snapped a bolt at the shop-manual torque. The factory value wasn't found. |
| Engine torque strut bolts (passenger side) | 20 | AllData via Rennlist: 20 Nm (15 ft-lb) as the initial tightening, then +90° on new one-time bolts (two threads agree). eCarGuides instead says 46 ft-lb (62 Nm) with threadlocker. The Nm field holds the initial torque only; use new bolts WHT 004 595, WHT 005 204 and WHT 004 635 x2 (Rennlist parts list) and add the angle. |
| Transfer case drain and fill plugs | 17 | 13 ft-lb (AllData, quoted on Rennlist; eCarGuides also says 13 ft-lb). The Rennlist write-up said 20 Nm and its author cracked the case, and at least 5 cracked cases have been reported. Use new plugs and a 1/4-inch torque wrench or a short Allen key; stop when snug. |
| Differential drain and fill plugs (front and rear) | 35 | 26 ft-lb (35 Nm). |
| ATF drain/inspection plug | 16 | ±1 Nm, with a new seal (Porsche WM 370235 quoted on Rennlist, and the Rennlist parts table). eCarGuides says 15 ft-lb (20 Nm). |
| ATF level (overflow) tube, plastic | 2 | 1.5 ft-lb. It breaks easily. |
| ATF filter bolts | 10 | 7.5 ft-lb, criss-cross. |
| ATF pan bolts | 8 | 6 ft-lb, criss-cross. Overtightening makes the gasket leak. |
| Front calliper mounting bolts | 141 | 104 ft-lb. Single-use per Porsche; medium threadlocker (eCarGuides). eCarGuides says the video's 180 ft-lb is wrong. |
| Rear calliper mounting bolts | 85 | 63 ft-lb. |
| Brake disc set screw (T50) | 14 | 10.5 ft-lb, with anti-seize, or just snug. |
| Brake bleed nipples (11 mm) | 10 | 7.5 ft-lb, or snug by hand. |
| Front seat bolts (battery access, triple-square) | 50 | 37 ft-lb, with medium threadlocker. |

### Tyres

| Position | Size | Pressure | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front (20-inch standard: RS Spyder Design, 9.5J x 20) | 275/45 R20 110Y XL (summer) | 2.6 bar / 37 psi part load; 2.6 bar full load; comfort 2.4 bar (up to 160 km/h) | Size and rim are from the MY14 Porsche brochure GTS column. Pressures are from the 2011 958 manual (Cayenne S, 275/45 R20); check the GTS's B-pillar placard. |
| Rear (20-inch standard) | 275/45 R20 110Y XL (summer) | 2.9 bar / 42 psi part load; 3.2 bar / 46 psi full load; comfort 2.7 bar | The GTS runs the same size front and rear on 20s. Set the load state in the TPM menu (part or full load). |
| Front and rear (20-inch winter/all-season) | 275/45 R20 110V XL (M+S) | Part load 2.4 bar F / 2.7 bar R; full load 2.6 bar F / 3.2 bar R | The manual treats V as the minimum speed rating for winter/all-season tyres. |
| Front (21-inch option) | 295/35 R21 107Y XL (summer) | 2.6 bar / 37 psi part and full load; comfort 2.4 bar | Per the 2011 manual for the Cayenne/Cayenne S; the Turbo's full-load front pressure is 2.7 bar. The 21-inch rim width wasn't found. |
| Rear (21-inch option) | 295/35 R21 107Y XL (summer) | 2.9 bar / 42 psi part load; 3.2 bar / 46 psi full load; comfort 2.7 bar | |
| Collapsible spare (if fitted) | 195/75-18 106P or 195/65-19 106P | 3.5 bar / 51 psi | |
| All | N-rated (Porsche-approved) tyres | - | The manual says pressures apply only to Porsche-approved tyre makes and types, and that the load index and speed rating are minimums. N-spec (N0, N1, ...) is a Porsche-tuned construction and compound, not a higher load or speed rating (Rennlist). Owners report N-spec Michelin Latitude and Pirelli P Zero on Cayennes. AU prices for 275/45 R20 on 20/09/2026 (Tyroola, N-rating not stated): Michelin Pilot Sport 5 XL AU$500 each, Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico AU$495 each. A later 958.2 manual gives lower part-load pressures (34/42 psi), so the car's own placard is authoritative. |

### Jobs you can do at home

| Job | Rating | Time | Needs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil and filter | Easy | - | About 9.5 L Porsche A40 oil (e.g. Mobil 1 0W-40); filter 948 107 222 00 / Mahle OX254D4; filter-cap socket; belly pans off | NA V8 filter housing is under the engine, in front of and above the drain plug (on the Turbo it is on top). 958-107-222-10 is the V6 filter, not the V8. No dipstick - level is read in the instrument cluster. |
| Spark plugs (8) | Easy | 1.5-2.5 h | Bosch FGR5NQE04 x8; 5/8 in magnetic plug socket; torque wrench (22 ft-lb); triple-square and Torx sets | Remove side engine panels, passenger-side engine torque strut, coil covers and driver-side intake cover. Coil bolts are aluminium (one-time use, owners often reuse). |
| Ignition coils | Easy | - | Coils 948 602 104 13 | Same access as the spark plugs. |
| Air filters | Easy | - | | Rating is a judgement: the airbox lids come off during the plug job. Dealer price AU$212-327 for comparison. |
| Coolant change and bleed | With care | - | Vacuum coolant refill tool makes it far easier | No easy radiator drain on the 958. Owners either vacuum-fill ('no bleeding necessary') or open the vent-line ring, squeeze hoses and drive with the vent open. Replacing the Y-shaped vent line under the intake manifold is a much bigger job ('What a job!'). |
| 8-speed Tiptronic fluid (ATF) and filter | Special tool | 3 h | Scan tool to read ATF temperature (or IR thermometer workaround); fill adapter VAS 6262/2; fluid pump; car level on stands; about 10 L ATF | Level is set at 35-45 C fluid temperature. Drain and filter change uses 7.4-9.0 L. eCarGuides suggests every 8 years / 80,000 miles. |
| Transfer case fluid | Easy | - | About 0.78 L (PTM multi-plate) - fluid 000 043 305 63 for petrol S/GTS; Diesel/Hybrid Torsen case takes 958 341 536 00 (0.50 L) | Easy access but torque-critical: one owner cracked the housing mixing up 15 ft-lb and 20 Nm. Transfer case trouble is a known 958 issue on all but the diesels; fresh fluid often cures early symptoms. |
| Front and rear differential fluid | With care | - | 8 mm stubby hex, low-profile ratchet, fluid pump, torque wrench (35 Nm plugs) | Front fill plug is tight to reach. With PTV Plus (locking rear diff) the car must be off the ground so the wheels can be spun while filling in stages (about 1.3-1.4 L). No scan tool needed. |
| Front brakes (958.1 GTS 360 mm) | With care | - | Torque wrench to 104 ft-lb; new caliper bolts (one-time use) | The 958.1 GTS runs 360 mm front discs with red calipers (390 mm is the Turbo and the 2016-on GTS) - measure the disc or check the VIN before ordering. Rotors are heavy. |
| Rear brakes and parking brake | With care | - | Scan tool only for EPB service mode / calibration when rotors or shoes are changed | The 958 parking brake is a drum-in-hat shoe inside the rear rotor. Owners change rear pads without a scanner. Rotor or shoe jobs sometimes need service mode and calibration; shoes can also be adjusted through the rotor hole. Rear caliper bolts 63 ft-lb. |
| Air suspension struts (if fitted) | With care | - | Ball-joint puller; scan tool for ride-height calibration afterwards | Front: stabiliser link, air line, upper control arm ball joint, three top nuts, lower bolt. Rear: access from the cargo floor. Owners warn against aftermarket-tool ride-height calibrations - consider leaving calibration to a specialist. Check whether the car has air suspension at all. |
| Driveshaft centre bearing | With care | - | 10 mm triple-square bits; JXB carrier, Meyle kit or pressed-in bearing | Symptom is a bearing 'singing' that eases when warm. Porsche's fix is a whole driveshaft. Rusted exhaust bolts are the hard part. |
| Transfer case replacement | Specialist | 3.8 h (labour guide) | | One owner calls it 'fairly easy to remove/replace'; the unit's weight is the main problem on jack stands. |
| Lifting an air-suspension car | Easy | - | Jack mode / levelling disabled before jacking | On the 955/957, hold the height switch forward 5-10 s until 'Regulation Switched Off'. The exact 958 sequence was not verified - use the owner's manual. |

### Diagnostic and coding tools

- **Launch X431 (V+, PROS Mini, Diagun IV, CRP919X BT / Pros Elite)** - The recommended owner-level coding tool for the 958. Rules: charger on (above 12.4V), never 'Online Coding' or 'Restore Default Setting', screenshot values before changing. Treat air-suspension functions as expert-only. Does: Offline coding of all the owner-level changes above (confirmed on 958s in the Rennlist coding thread); Battery coding (Gateway); Service resets, fault reading and clearing, bi-directional tests; Custom TPMS preset in the instrument cluster; Works on other car makes too. Can't: Key and fob programming (online coding needs a Porsche dealer account); Factory tow-module retrofit on a 2013 GTS (needed PIWIS or the dealer); Some modules (one owner needed PIWIS for a BCM function). Price: Australian price not verified. A Rennlist owner put coding-capable tools at USD 900-1,100..
- **Foxwell NT530 (Porsche)** - Fine for servicing, but it can't do any of the coding changes. Its ride-height calibration is risky: a 2016 GTS owner had the front about 50 mm higher than the rear before sorting it out (needs battery above 12.1V, ignition on, engine off). Software updates need a Windows PC. Does: Service interval resets; Reading and clearing fault codes; Height sensor calibration (Level control/PASM > Special functions). Can't: Control module coding or programming. Per Foxwell's own product page, as quoted by an owner: 'doesn't support control module coding and programming'; Key programming.
- **iCarsoft POR V2 / V3** - A diagnostic and reset tool only. Warning: an iCarSoft 3.0 user poking at air-suspension diagnostics was left with a permanent 'Chassis System Failure' and dead ride-height/PASM buttons. The likely cause was the level-control module being left in diagnostic mode. Keep it away from air-suspension functions on the GTS. Does: Service resets; Battery registration; Code reading and diagnostics. Can't: Coding (confirmed for POR V2.0 in the Rennlist coding thread).
- **PIWIS II/III clone** - Not recommended as a first tool. Buggy, often in German, and risky. Leave dealer-level jobs to a dealer or a specialist with a genuine PIWIS. Does: Dealer-level functions, including key programming if you have the codes; Consistency-checked multi-ECU coding. Can't: Guarantee: it's counterfeit software, and stories exist of misconfigured clones bricking engine and transmission control units; Some hidden items the Launch reaches weren't visible on one PIWIS2 v14. Price: About USD 450 for PIWIS II clones (May 2020); decent clones with an interface 'USD 1000 or more'. The real PIWIS is leased to dealers for about USD 20k a year..
- **Autel MaxiSys** - Capable but pricier. The Launch has far more 958-specific coding reports. Does: Coded mirror auto-fold on a 2011 Cayenne Turbo; Coded comfort windows on a 2019 911 (MS908). Can't: Broad 958 coding not confirmed in the sources.

## 958 Cayenne mods and upgrades, with Queensland legality

### Hidden features (no tool needed)

Built-in tricks most owners never find: a hidden cluster menu, key-fob window and mirror controls, memory buttons that store climate and start-up volume, and a programmable tailgate height. Free and good for a first session together.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Cost: $0 AUD. Time: 30 min.
- Free.
- Gotcha: Hidden cluster menu: scroll to the vehicle title in the right-hand display and press the stalk button.
- Gotcha: Hold the fob unlock or lock button to move all the windows (seen on a UK car; may vary by market).
- Gotcha: Press lock twice and hold, on the fob or door handle, to fold the mirrors.
- Gotcha: Memory buttons also save the start-up volume. Set it low before saving.
- Gotcha: Tailgate height: stop it where you want, then hold the tailgate button to program it.
- Gotcha: B-pillar button disables the interior motion sensor (useful for a dog in a locked car).
- Gotcha: The rear wiper wipes automatically when you select reverse after using the front wipers.

### Sport exhaust valves always open

Pull the vacuum hoses off the two factory sport exhaust flaps at the tailpipes so the valves stay open. It's the best-value sound upgrade: free, fully reversible and using factory hardware.

- Area: Sound and performance. Effort: Easy. QLD: check. Cost: $0 AUD. Time: Minutes.
- Free.
- Legality: The exhaust stays factory, but the stationary noise limit (certified level + 5 dB(A)) still applies. The GTS's certified figure wasn't found, so a stationary test at an inspection station would settle it.
- Gotcha: On MY13 the valves open only with the Sport button; MY14 has a separate exhaust button.
- Gotcha: Tie up the hose and tape the actuator port so nothing gets in.
- Gotcha: A 2013 GTS owner reports no warning lights.
- Gotcha: The cabin sound barely changes; most of the difference is outside the car.
- Gotcha: A dedicated exhaust button can't be added to a MY13: the switch panel is one coded unit.

### Leather clean and bolster dye repair

Driver's outer bolster and steering wheel lose their colour coat and go shiny with age. Cleaning and a colour-matched dye kit fix most of it; badly torn seats need a new cover.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Weekend. Cost: $30–$125 AUD.
- Gyeon leather cleaner $26.99-28.99; Leatherique system $74.99 (250 mL) or $124.99 (500 mL). New OEM 18-way seat cover was about US$930 in 2022.
- Gotcha: On ventilated or perforated seats, mist cleaner onto the cloth, never the seat - liquid in the holes swells the leather.
- Gotcha: One owner's Chemical Guys leather wipes marked Bordeaux red leather.
- Gotcha: Clean leather looks matte, not shiny.

### Headlight lens restore and film

958 headlight lenses fog and their UV coat can flake after years outdoors. Polish them clear, then protect with clear film so Brisbane UV doesn't undo the work.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Easy. Cost: $34–$118 AUD.
- Maxshine kit $33.95, 3D GLW kit $39.85, Optimum Opti-Lens coating $118 (Detailing Shed). Pre-cut Lamin-X film listed for 2011-2014 Cayenne.
- Gotcha: Inside-lamp condensation is a separate fix: vent and hairdryer.
- Gotcha: Haze on the inner projector lens needs the lamp split - skip that.
- Sources: [Rennlist: headlight UV coating flaking](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1179757-headlight-clear-coat-issue.html), [Detailing Shed headlight kits](https://detailingshed.com.au/products/maxshine-headlight-restoration-kit)

### Alcantara clean and protect

The GTS has Alcantara seat centres, armrest, door inserts, headliner and pillars (and the wheel rim if optioned); it goes flat and matted with use. Clean it properly before paying for a retrim - owners find it is often matted, not worn through.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Easy. Cost: $70–$125 AUD. Time: Protectant needs 24-48 hours to cure before it gets wet.
- Product cost. Bowden's Own Fabra Cadabra $22.99, Plush Brush $32.99, Fabratection $46.99; Sonax Alcantara cleaner $29.99; Mint rubber brush $8.99.
- Gotcha: Never spray cleaner straight onto the fabric - spray the pad or brush.
- Gotcha: Avoid solvent-based and generic fabric cleaners.
- Gotcha: Reapply protectant about every six months on high-wear areas.

### DIY one-step polish and sealant

A dual-action polisher, one-step polish and a spray sealant or DIY coating removes swirls and makes the car far easier to wash. Best-value paint work for a car this age.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Weekend. Cost: $300–$400 AUD.
- Approximate total of listed items: Mint DAS6 V2 polisher $159.99, Menzerna 3-step sampler $79.99, pads $8.99-13.99, sealant or coating $28.99-129.99.
- Gotcha: Decontaminate (iron remover and clay) before polishing.
- Gotcha: Work in shade - Brisbane sun dries product onto paint.

### Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto (keep the PCM)

Adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to the factory PCM 3.1 screen. Best buy is a fibre-optic (MOST) interface such as the Mr12Volt P3000: it keeps digital Bose/Burmester sound, the factory mic, steering-wheel controls and the reversing camera. Avoid full screen replacements.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Weekend. Cost: $800–$1,500 AUD. Time: 1.5-3 h (experienced) to 5 h; one owner took 10 h fixing ribbon seating.
- Mr12Volt P3000-PM31 is USD 549 (about AUD 800-850 at an assumed 1.5 rate, plus shipping and GST). Euro Car Upgrades (Buderim QLD) kit AUD 990. Installed: AUD 1,430 (Autofidelity VIC), AUD 1,249.95-1,499.95 (Car Stereo Shop WA). Cheaper ISUDAR board ~USD 300; AliExpress boards ~USD 100-160.
- Gotcha: Check the centre armrest for AUX/USB first. Some 958s (including one owner's MY14 GTS) have none. AUX-based kits then have no audio path; the MOST-type Mr12Volt still works.
- Gotcha: Buy a current Mr12Volt P3000. The old blue P1000 box doesn't support the factory mic (grey P2000 does and can be upgraded).
- Gotcha: Ribbon-cable clamps are fragile on 10-year-old PCMs and must be fully seated. Test in the car before reassembling.
- Gotcha: An ISUDAR board burnt a chip on one 2014 958's PCM main board (single report).
- Gotcha: If a factory TV tuner is fitted, Mr12Volt needs it bypassed with an optical loop.
- Gotcha: Unresolved: whether FM radio can play while CarPlay navigation is on screen (Mr12Volt uses the TV source). Ask the seller.
- Gotcha: Run the echo-cancellation calibration and update firmware (an iPhone 17 disconnect bug was patched).
- Gotcha: Worth cloning the PCM hard drive to an SSD while the unit is out.

### Cooling system teardown

Check whether the thermostat housing pipes are glued or threaded. If they're glued, fit the threaded housing and do the vent Y-pipe, water pump, thermostat and rear crossover fitting in one teardown. MY13-14 cars may already have the threaded pipes, so inspect before buying parts.

- Area: Reliability. Effort: Specialist. QLD: fine. Cost: $1,000–$1,500 AUD. Time: About 6 hours for the housing alone (AllData labour time).
- Parts about A$1,000-1,500. A dealer charged US$1,800 (≈A$2,500) for the housing fix alone in 2018. Engine-out quotes for the rear crossover reached US$8-10k.
- Gotcha: Wiggle the pipes where they enter the thermostat housing. Any movement means plan the replacement.
- Gotcha: The intake manifold and fuel rail must come off. Replace the single-use aluminium bolts and the intake manifold gaskets.
- Gotcha: The plastic cylinder-head vent Y-pipe cracks with age and leaks into the engine V. Replace it while you're in there.
- Gotcha: The glued rear crossover fitting can be pinned in place (drill, tap, Loctite 271, stainless cap screw) with the engine in, if you remove the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Gotcha: Removing the three-piece false firewall gives about 8 inches more room.
- Gotcha: Replace the O-ring on the expansion tank's bottom hose while the system is drained.
- Gotcha: Owners recommend a vacuum fill tool to avoid airlocks.
- Gotcha: Do the oil separator gaskets and any carbon cleaning in the same teardown.
- Part: Threaded thermostat housing 948 106 080 02 (replaces 948 106 080 00)

### Replace TPMS sensors

Original tyre-pressure sensors last about 11-12 years, so a MY13-14 car is likely due. Owners recommend Huf sensors, and the car relearns them through the instrument cluster menu with no tool.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Time: Tyre-shop fit, then a short relearn drive.
- Not priced. Easiest to have fitted at the next tyre change.
- Gotcha: Porsche changed TPMS systems partway through MY2014. Have a dealer confirm the right sensor from the VIN.
- Gotcha: Avoid cheap knock-off sensors.
- Gotcha: Don't carry the old wheels in the car during the relearn; the car sees 8 sensors and won't learn.
- Gotcha: Don't confirm 'tyre change' settings until the system reads the new sensors.
- Sources: [Rennlist: aftermarket TPMS sensor battery life](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1487988-aftermarket-tpms-sensors-battery-life.html), [Rennlist: TPMS won't go into learning mode](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1302128-new-tires-tpms-won-t-go-into-learning-mode.html), [Rennlist: Schwaben TPMS OK?](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1472081-schwaben-tpms-ok.html)

### Coding: convenience features

Scan-tool coding changes: one-touch indicator 3 to 5 flashes, windows up/down from the key fob, mirrors auto-fold on lock, auto-lock speed, teardrop wipe, and tailgate beep off. Each is a single value change and can be changed back.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Time: 30-60 min.
- Needs a coding-capable scan tool such as a Launch X431 (see tools).
- Gotcha: Put a battery charger on first; keep above 12.4V while writing to modules.
- Gotcha: Never use 'Online Coding' or 'Restore Default Setting'. One owner zeroed his parking-brake module that way.
- Gotcha: Screenshot every original value first; 'Back Up All Coding' doesn't work on the Launch.
- Gotcha: Many changes only show after you switch off, lock the car and wait 30 seconds.
- Gotcha: Mirror auto-fold needs power-folding mirrors already fitted. Once coded, 'Mirror retract' appears in the PCM car options.
- Gotcha: Indicator flashes may already be adjustable in the cluster settings menu. Check first.
- Gotcha: Tailgate beep: set FFB, ST, FIT and HKIT to inactive in the Rear lid module, for both open and close.

### Transfer case fluid change

Drain and refill the PL72 transfer case with the correct fluid and keep doing it. It's the cheapest protection against the 958's most common expensive failure, and owners often report symptoms clearing after one to three changes.

- Area: Reliability. Effort: Weekend. QLD: fine. Cost: $150 AUD.
- Under about A$150 for fluid and new plugs. If it fails: dealer replacement US$5,000-5,500 in 2024 (≈A$7,000-7,700); AWD.tech remanufactured unit €1,650-1,890 (≈A$2,650-3,050).
- Gotcha: Torque the drain and fill plugs to 20 Nm (15 ft-lb). An owner cracked the case by using a 1/2" wrench set to 20 ft-lb, so use a 3/8" or 1/4" wrench.
- Gotcha: Remove the fill plug first, so you're never left with an empty case you can't refill.
- Gotcha: It's fill-to-overflow: about 0.78-0.85 L, with the car level.
- Gotcha: Use new drain and fill plugs; they come with thread sealant.
- Gotcha: Never use generic gear oil. One shop's Motul 75W-80 caused immediate shudder.
- Gotcha: Diagnosis: unplug the transfer case stepper-motor connector and drive gently. If the lurch goes away, the problem is the transfer case.
- Gotcha: Interval from owners: every 15,000-30,000 km, or every second oil change.
- Gotcha: Keep the same tyre size and wear on all four corners; replace all four together.
- Gotcha: Turn on air-suspension jack mode before lifting: hold the level switch forward for about 10 seconds until the lights blink.

### Leather dash lifting re-glue (if fitted)

The leather dash is optional on the GTS; where fitted it commonly shrinks and lifts behind the instruments and near the passenger A-pillar, worse in sun. Hydrate it, inject leather glue and weight it down early - once it has shrunk back it cannot be stretched.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Weekend. Time: About a week of daily conditioning, then 12-24 hours weighted after gluing.
- Not priced in AUD: leather glue, syringes and conditioner. Full re-cover quoted around US$3,000 by one owner.
- Gotcha: Check first whether this car has the optional leather dash.
- Gotcha: Act at the bubble stage; shrinkage is permanent.
- Gotcha: Needle holes need massaging closed afterwards.

### Door sill scuff protectors

Vinyl sill protectors stop shoes scuffing the painted door sills. Cheap and quick.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Easy. Time: About 30 minutes.
- About US$8 for a set.
- Gotcha: Warm the vinyl in the sun first so it is pliable.
- Sources: [Rennlist: 2013 GTS sill stickers](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1111163-diy-door-sill-scuff-protection-stickers.html)

### Headlight seal replacement

The rubber seal around each headlight turns gooey and crumbles - widely reported. Headlights come out tool-free with the Porsche key tool, and new seals take well under an hour.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Easy. Time: About 30-45 minutes (Viton DIY).
- 958.1: original-style seals from AliExpress about US$45 a pair, or Viton cord about US$80. 958.2 OEM parts 958-631-119-00 / -120-00 about US$78 each.
- Gotcha: Make sure the headlight clamp is seated correctly before refitting the lamp.
- Gotcha: Old seals can leave black goo - clean the channel.
- Sources: [Rennlist: Viton seal DIY](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1066543-diy-headlight-gaskets-replacements-for-958-1-a.html), [Rennlist: AliExpress original seals](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1276773-found-a-source-for-cayenne-958-1-headlight-gaskets.html), [Rennlist: 958.2 part numbers](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1207309-headlight-surround-gaskets-are-falling-apart.html)

### Brake pads and rotors (360 mm GTS set)

The MY13-14 GTS has 360 mm front and 330 mm rear discs, not 390 mm. Fresh rotors and a low-dust ceramic pad are the sensible upgrade.

- Area: Suspension, wheels, brakes. Effort: Weekend. QLD: fine. Cost: $60–$1,800 AUD.
- Aftermarket pads from about US$40-45 per axle (≈A$60). A full front and rear job in parts was US$800-1,300 (≈A$1,100-1,800).
- Legality: Like-for-like or manufacturer-optional brakes are fine. A Turbo 390 mm conversion wasn't a GTS option, so it needs an Approved Person. Don't machine rotors below their limit.
- Gotcha: Measure the disc or do a VIN parts lookup before ordering; some sellers list 390 mm for the GTS.
- Gotcha: Caliper bolts are torque-to-yield, so replace them. One owner quotes 140 Nm; verify in the manual.
- Gotcha: No grease on the pad backs or shims (Porsche rule); do grease the clips and pins.
- Gotcha: Light-braking squeal is common; clean and bed in properly.
- Gotcha: Bleed order: FL, FR, RR, RL, outer bleeder then inner, with a pressure bleeder at about 2 bar.
- Part: Front rotors 958 351 403 01 / 958 351 404 01 (Zimmermann 600.3247.20 / 600.3248.20)

### Wheel face coating

A DIY ceramic wheel coating makes brake dust rinse off far more easily. Best done with the wheels off after a deep clean.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Weekend. Cost: $80 AUD.
- Gyeon Q2 Rim EVO 30 mL (carcareproducts.com.au).
- Gotcha: Keep strong acid wheel cleaners well out of reach.
- Sources: [carcareproducts.com.au Gyeon Q2 Rim](https://www.carcareproducts.com.au/products/gyeon-q2-rim-30ml)

### Wheel kerb-rash repair

Mobile repairers cover Brisbane for kerbed wheels; full refinishing is a shop job. Kerbed wheels are an easy negotiating point for buyers, so fix them before sale.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Specialist. Cost: $99 AUD. Time: About 45 minutes per repair (Mag Repair).
- Mag Repair (mobile, Brisbane/Gold Coast) from $99 + GST per repair. US full refinish references: US$850-880 for four 21" painted; US$225 per wheel powder coat.
- Gotcha: Dealer-refinished wheels have peeled; ask about prep and warranty.
- Gotcha: Powder coating forged wheels needs controlled cure temperatures.

### Oil separator (AOS / PCV)

The V8's air-oil separator membrane tears with age, causing warning lights and oil use. Replace the unit or membrane on condition, or while the intake is off. A catch can is largely redundant on this engine.

- Area: Reliability. Effort: Weekend. QLD: fine. Cost: $100–$430 AUD.
- Genuine AOS A$430 (Australian owner). An aftermarket membrane is about A$100 delivered, but one split after a year.
- Legality: If a catch can is fitted, it must stay in the closed crankcase loop, never venting to atmosphere.
- Gotcha: High crankcase vacuum at the oil cap is normal on these engines.
- Gotcha: Owners report Porsche treats up to 1 L per 1,000 km of oil use as acceptable.
- Gotcha: Membrane size is 87.5-88 mm, and there are different parts for different V8s, so order the right one.
- Gotcha: If you fit a catch can anyway, it goes inline in the hose from the oil-mist separator to the intake plenum.
- Sources: [Rennlist: 958.1 CS 4.8 V8 air oil separator](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1337491-958-1-cs-4-8-v8-air-oil-separator-aos.html), [Rennlist: 958 DIY: AOS membrane R&R](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1236286-958-cayenne-diy-aos-membrane-r-and-r.html), [Rennlist: Adding an oil catch can](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1167822-need-advice-for-location-of-adding-oil-catch-can.html), [VSB 14 Section LA (Engines)](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engine_01jan2011_v3.pdf)

### Driveshaft centre bearing

The driveshaft carrier bearing commonly starts to whine from under the rear-seat floor. Porsche sells only the complete shaft, but a VW carrier kit or a JXB clamshell carrier fixes it far more cheaply. Most owners wait for the noise rather than replacing it early.

- Area: Reliability. Effort: Weekend. QLD: fine. Cost: $420–$4,500 AUD.
- JXB carrier US$299.99 (≈A$420). A Timken 6007-2RS bearing is about US$15. The OEM complete shaft is over US$3,200 (≈A$4,500+).
- Gotcha: Test: push a grease needle through the bearing seal. If the noise stops, it's the bearing.
- Gotcha: The exhaust centre section and heat shields must come off. Support the shaft with straps or a helper.
- Gotcha: Turn on air-suspension jack mode before lifting.
- Gotcha: Centre bearing to body torque: 20 Nm + 90°.
- Gotcha: One owner's old bearing failed inside the JXB carrier; a new Timken 6007-2RS fixed it.

### Front + rear dash cam, hardwired

A two-channel dash cam powered from the dash-end fuse panel so the wires are hidden. Straightforward on the 958, but on this era of car the dash cam cable can knock out the PCM's GPS.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Weekend. Cost: $449–$869 AUD. Time: 1-3 h.
- Camera only (Dash Cams Australia: FineVu GX35 2CH AUD 449 to BlackVue Elite 10 2CH AUD 869). Add a hardwire kit; parking-mode battery packs are AUD 389-399.
- Gotcha: GPS antenna sits behind the rear-view mirror. A mirror-mount dash cam's power cable dropped a 2013 GTS's nav to 0 satellites. Fix: shield the cable (foil or shielding tape) and route it away from the antenna. Check the satellite count afterwards (Map > Info > Location info).
- Gotcha: Keep the cable behind the A-pillar airbag. On the 958 there are no screws behind the 'airbag' logo; prying it has damaged pillars.
- Gotcha: The right-side fuse panel has empty ACC and constant-12V slots for add-a-fuse taps.
- Gotcha: Some PCM/accessory circuits stay live 20-30 min after locking. Test which feed you're on (ACC, delayed, constant).
- Gotcha: The rain-sensor feed at the mirror is always live, not switched.
- Gotcha: Don't remove the vent above the fuse cover; it's bolted internally.
- Gotcha: Rear cable: use the left tailgate conduit (the right one carries the washer hose).
- Gotcha: Fit the supplied ferrite filter or DAB reception can suffer.

### Professional correction and ceramic coating

A pro paint correction plus ceramic coating is widely reported by 958 owners as making a daily car much easier to keep clean. Brisbane starting prices are for small cars; a Cayenne and the correction it needs will cost more.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Specialist. Cost: $849–$1,449 AUD.
- Brisbane 'from' prices for small cars: PPF Wraps & Protection Gtechniq $849 (5-yr) / $1,449 (9-yr); We Tint Windows Gyeon from $950 / $1,450. Dealer ceramic $1,200-1,500 for a small-medium SUV (Drive, 2022). Correction usually extra.
- Gotcha: Pro coatings need top-ups and sometimes annual inspections to keep the warranty.
- Gotcha: Ask whether correction is included.

### Interior and footwell LED bulbs

Swap the cabin, footwell, door-edge, glovebox and boot bulbs for LEDs. Cheap, quick and a big visible improvement; code the footwell lights to LED so ordinary LEDs don't throw warnings.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Time: 30-60 min.
- Aftermarket bulbs about USD 50-60 for a set versus about USD 450 for Porsche's 18-bulb Extended LED package (Rennlist). AUD prices not verified.
- Gotcha: LEDs are polarity-sensitive. If one doesn't light, turn it round. Test before refitting the cover.
- Gotcha: Pry covers gently from the small cut-out or the housing breaks.
- Gotcha: Bulb quality varies. A Sydney Porsche specialist tried about four brands before settling on one.
- Gotcha: Most interior positions take the same bulb; the boot ceiling is different.
- Gotcha: Vanity-mirror and puddle lights are fiddly to remove.
- Sources: [Rennlist: DIY interior LED light package](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/748844-diy-interior-led-light-package.html), [Rennlist coding guide (footwell LED coding)](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1160705-cayenne-coding-the-ultimate-guide-and-discussion.html)

### LED number plate, side marker and fog bulbs (with coding)

Fit LED number plate, side marker, fog or cornering bulbs and code each position to LED so the car stops reporting blown bulbs. Needs a coding-capable scan tool.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. QLD: check. Time: 30-60 min.
- Bulbs are cheap (not priced). Needs a Launch X431-class tool (see tools).
- Legality: Not researched. Exterior lights must meet Australian lighting rules, especially white LED side markers that replace amber ones. Check before fitting.
- Gotcha: Number plate LEDs need built-in resistors, or you get a bulb-out warning.
- Gotcha: Plate-light coding (rear-end electronics) sometimes fails with 'check conditions'. One owner still saw a brief startup warning and also disabled the light-out warning in the instrument cluster.
- Gotcha: Side marker coding is in front-end electronics ('Side marker light SML in LED'). The bulb is a 194/T10.
- Gotcha: Flickering LED fogs: code 'fog light in LED'.
- Gotcha: Clear side markers with a DRL 'switchback' wire need tapping into the headlight DRL feed; wire colours differ by model.

### Sharper reversing camera (OEM harness)

Swap the grainy factory reversing camera for a 720p CVBS camera using Porsche wiring harnesses. Owners report it's plug and play with no coding, and all the PCM functions stay.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Weekend.
- Not priced. Parts: harnesses 8D0973822 and 1J0973332, a 720p CVBS camera, and a Fakra-to-RCA lead.
- Gotcha: The PCM only accepts CVBS. An AHD camera needs its mode wire cut to force CVBS (see the camera manual).
- Gotcha: With a Mr12Volt, wire an extra camera's trigger to the '12v rear camera' lead, not the tail-light reverse wire. That caused a 'Left tail light defective' warning on one car.
- Gotcha: Cars with a factory TV tuner (behind the right D-pillar) can route the camera through it. A water-damaged tuner killed one car's camera, so check the sunroof drains.
- Gotcha: Parking guide lines may not appear with aftermarket cameras.
- Sources: [Rennlist: aftermarket camera with OEM PCM functionality](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1463780-aftermarket-back-up-camera-upgrade-with-oem-pcm-functionality.html), [Rennlist: tail light warning after camera install with Mr12Volt](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1474881-left-tail-light-defective-after-backup-camera-install-w-mr12volt.html), [Rennlist: TV tuner and no reversing camera](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1417836-958-1-2010-pcm-3-1-tv-tuner-and-no-back-camera-problem.html)

### Coding: battery registration and custom TPMS preset

Owner-level jobs that save a dealer visit: register a new battery (Gateway > coding) and add a custom low-pressure TPMS preset for beach or off-road driving, so the cluster doesn't nag at reduced pressures.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Weekend. Time: 30-60 min.
- Needs a coding-capable scan tool (see tools).
- Gotcha: Battery coding is under Gateway > coding, not Special Functions.
- Gotcha: The TPMS preset means renaming an existing preset, entering eight front/rear pressure values, then a cluster control-unit reset.
- Gotcha: Same safety rules as all coding: charger on, no 'Online Coding', screenshot values first.
- Sources: [Rennlist coding guide (battery coding)](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1160705-cayenne-coding-the-ultimate-guide-and-discussion.html), [958 Garage: TPMS custom setting creation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaH-ZXdsFZY)

### Spark plugs and coils

Replace the plugs on schedule with the OE Bosch plug and fit fresh OEM Beru coils and boots. There's no real coil 'upgrade', and cheap coils have failed early.

- Area: Reliability. Effort: Weekend. QLD: fine. Cost: $570 AUD. Time: About 2-4 hours.
- Plugs under A$100 for eight. OEM coils about US$42 each (≈A$59; ≈A$470 for eight). A US independent shop charged US$400 for the job.
- Gotcha: Owners cite 40,000 miles or 4 years (about 64,000 km); check the Australian service book.
- Gotcha: The aluminium coil hold-down screws are single-use and snap easily.
- Gotcha: The passenger-side torque strut bolts are aluminium and single-use: 15 ft-lb + 90° when new.
- Gotcha: Tools: triple-square drivers, external Torx, a 3/8" wobble extension (the rear passenger-side plug is tight), thin-wall deep sockets and a torque wrench.
- Gotcha: Moving the coolant hose for access to cylinder 4 can make the expansion tank's hose O-ring weep.
- Part: Bosch OE spark plugs (confirm by VIN)
- Part: Beru OEM ignition coils
- Sources: [Rennlist: DIY video: spark plugs and ignition coils V8](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1310885-diy-video-spark-plugs-and-ignition-coils-v8-r-and-r.html), [Rennlist: Changing spark plugs on 958 GTS](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/965620-changing-spark-plug-on-958-gts.html), [Rennlist: New Beru coil pack failed within 2 years](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1473829-new-beru-coil-pack-failed-within-2-years-v8-engine.html), [Rennlist: Ignition coils brands](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1130897-ignition-coils-brands.html)

### Wheel alignment to GTS spec

Have a Porsche-experienced shop align the car to the GTS specification, with values near the middle of the range. Owners say a good alignment transforms how the car drives.

- Area: Suspension, wheels, brakes. Effort: Specialist. QLD: fine.
- No Australian price found.
- Gotcha: Avoid chain-store alignments.
- Gotcha: Dealers will align at the Low suspension setting on request.
- Gotcha: Camber and caster are adjustable (eccentric bolts).
- Sources: [Rennlist: Alignment spec for 958.2 Cayenne S](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1433492-alignment-spec-for-958-2-cayenne-s.html), [Rennlist: Wheel alignment: front left camber](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1167114-wheel-alignment-front-left-camber.html)

### Wheels and tyres

Owners favour 295/40 R21 over 295/35 R21, and 20-inch wheels, for ride and pothole protection. Replace all four tyres together to protect the transfer case.

- Area: Suspension, wheels, brakes. Effort: Easy. QLD: check.
- No Australian prices found.
- Legality: Diameter may be up to 15 mm larger or 26 mm smaller than any size the manufacturer designates for the model (soft roader), or up to 50 mm larger if the car is ADR category MC; check the compliance plate. 295/40 R21 is +13.9 mm over the standard 275/45 R20. Non-factory spacers aren't permitted.
- Gotcha: Standard GTS sizes: 275/45 R20 (755.5 mm) and 295/35 R21 (739.9 mm).
- Gotcha: 285/45 R20 is 764.5 mm; 275/50 R20 is 783.0 mm, which is only OK if the car is MC category.
- Gotcha: Keep speedometer accuracy, and at least the placard load rating.
- Gotcha: Consider Porsche 'N'-rated tyres.
- Sources: [Rennlist: 295/40/21 tyres do fit our 958](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1293552-295-40-21-tires-do-fit-our-958-a.html), [Rennlist: Ride quality on 20" vs 21" wheels](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1343566-ride-quality-on-20-vs-21-wheels.html), [Rennlist: 20" Spyder wheel tyre options](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1514374-20-spyder-wheel-tyre-options.html), [TMR Vehicle Standards Information: Minor Modifications (Feb 2026)](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0)

### Door card leather re-glue

Door-card leather and foam can come unglued and bulge; on a 2013 GTS the windows then snagged the warped panel. Remove the panel, re-glue and clamp along its length.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Weekend.
- Spray upholstery adhesive and about 10 clamps per side; not priced.
- Gotcha: Put a long, wide stick under the clamps to spread pressure and avoid marking the leather.
- Gotcha: Reported mostly in humid climates.
- Sources: [Rennlist: door panels unglued (2013 GTS fix)](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1275203-door-panels-unglued-raise-up-with-windows.html)

### Sticky console buttons

958 console buttons are hard plastic, so stickiness is almost always spilled drink from the cup holders, not a peeling coating. Contact cleaner and repeated pressing usually frees them; worst case the switch module comes out for a bench clean.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Easy.
- Contact cleaner is cheap; a replacement module was about US$200 from Suncoast and is VIN/option-specific.
- Gotcha: Car off, and let everything dry fully before powering up.
- Gotcha: One owner's contact-cleaner fix came back; a few drops of light oil held.
- Gotcha: There are about a dozen switch-module variants - order by VIN.
- Sources: [Rennlist: 958 buttons are hard plastic](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1060680-sticky-buttons.html), [Rennlist: sport button sticking](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1212072-sport-mode-button-sticking.html), [Rennlist: cleaning sticky sport button](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1155185-cleaning-sticky-sport-button.html), [Rennlist: replacing the switch module](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1476661-replacing-sticking-switch-buttons-bottom-of-center-console.html)

### Driver's window switch chrome lip

The chrome lip on the driver's window switch commonly breaks. The replacement switch is a quick DIY from the armrest.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Easy. Time: About 20 minutes.
- About US$132 for the part (order by VIN - about 10 variants).
- Gotcha: Order by VIN - switch varies with options and year.
- Sources: [Rennlist: window switch chrome lip DIY](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/950505-diy-driver-side-window-switch-chrome-lip-breaking.html)

### Bonnet crest replacement

The bonnet crest commonly delaminates and peels on 958s and is not covered by CPO. Swapping it is a quick job with the original nuts and washer.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Easy.
- New-style crest from a Porsche dealer about US$131 (Sunset); black AliExpress crest about US$18.
- Gotcha: Tailgate PORSCHE letters also peel from exhaust heat.
- Gotcha: Black tailgate lettering needs a spacing template (Etsy template about US$18.99 vs body shop US$800-1,200).
- Sources: [Rennlist: hood emblem peeling](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1190688-my-hood-emblem-is-peeling.html), [Rennlist: crest not covered by CPO](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1051122-front-porsche-crest-peeling.html), [Rennlist: new-style crest price](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1409478-turbonite-hood-crest-upgrade.html), [Rennlist: black crest fitment](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1370733-blacked-out-hood-badge.html), [Rennlist: tailgate letter template](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1409650-upgraded-the-cargo-emblems-to-black.html)

### Targeted paint protection film

At 110,000-150,000 km the front already has stone chips, so full-front PPF locks them in and costs more than it adds. Film just the high-value spots: headlights, door-handle cups and the rear loading lip.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Specialist.
- Brisbane installers quote only. US references: full-front US$1,100-1,500; custom front quarter over US$2,000.
- Gotcha: Installer skill matters more than film brand - one owner got a bubbled bonnet.
- Gotcha: Edges and join lines show after a few years.
- Gotcha: Touch up chips before filming.
- Sources: [Rennlist: clear bra quotes](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/960539-3m-clear-bra-and-opti-coat.html), [Rennlist: PPF bubbles](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1415838-ppf.html), [PPF Wraps & Protection packages](https://ppfwrapsbrisbane.com.au/)

### Legal ceramic window tint

Ceramic tint cuts heat and shields the Alcantara and leather from UV. Queensland limits as quoted by a Brisbane tinter: 35% VLT front sides, 20% behind the driver with both side mirrors, top 10% band only on the windscreen.

- Area: Exterior. Effort: Specialist. QLD: check.
- SUV prices are by quote. Brisbane sedan examples: from $375 (entry level), XPEL XR Plus ceramic $695. An Australian owner paid $490 on a small SUV.
- Legality: TMR's site could not be reached (403). Limits are from We Tint Windows citing TMR's September 2017 rules; the 35% front limit includes factory glass. Confirm with TMR or an Approved Inspection Station.
- Gotcha: Over-dark front windows cause night glare and poor visibility when looking left.
- Gotcha: Check the factory privacy glass first - film stacks on it.
- Sources: [We Tint Windows: darkest legal tint Qld](https://www.wetintwindows.com.au/darkest-legal-tint/), [We Tint Windows: tint prices](https://wetintwindows.com.au/how-much-tint-car-windows/), [Rennlist: tint experiences](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1043668-window-tint-film-50-a.html)

### Logo puddle lights and interior LEDs

Porsche-logo projector courtesy lights swap in seconds; aftermarket LED bulbs replace the interior incandescents. Cheap, reversible and fun together.

- Area: Retrofits. Effort: Easy. Time: About 10 seconds per puddle light.
- Porsche's 18-bulb LED package was about US$450 vs about US$50-60 aftermarket.
- Gotcha: Keep the original lamps.
- Gotcha: One owner had a bad experience with a bulb vendor.
- Sources: [Rennlist: puddle lights DIY](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1111172-diy-porsche-logo-puddle-lights.html), [Rennlist: interior LED package](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/748844-diy-interior-led-light-package.html)

### Air suspension lowering

Lower the factory air suspension by coding the height sensors, by fitting lowering links or with an electronic module. It's for looks; ride reports are mixed and an alignment is needed afterwards.

- Area: Suspension, wheels, brakes. Effort: Easy. QLD: check. Cost: $0 AUD.
- Coding is free if you own a capable scan tool. Links are US$55-270 (≈A$80-380). Module prices (TechArt, H&R ETS) weren't verified.
- Legality: Keep at least 100 mm ground clearance and meet ADR 43. Lower by no more than one-third of the suspension travel, with front and rear lowered equally.
- Gotcha: Foxwell NT530 coding fails below 12.1 V; do it with the ignition on, engine off and doors closed.
- Gotcha: One owner briefly ended up with the front 2" higher than the rear.
- Gotcha: Links lower every height level; some owners call the ride bouncy.
- Gotcha: An H&R module auto-raised at speed and wouldn't re-lower for one owner.
- Gotcha: Get an alignment afterwards; CV joint angles can cause vibration.
- Sources: [Rennlist: Foxwell NT530 ride height calibration](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1283468-foxwell-nt530-ride-height-calibration.html), [Rennlist: Lowering modules](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1161503-lowering-modules.html), [Rennlist: Lowering links installed on GTS 958](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1271892-lowering-links-installed-today-on-gts-958-a.html), [TMR Vehicle Standards Information: Minor Modifications (Feb 2026)](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0), [VSB 14 Section LS (Tyres, Suspension, Steering)](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP11_Section_LS_Tyres_Suspension_Steering_Nov_2015_v4.pdf)

### Intake valve carbon cleaning

Walnut-blasting the direct-injected V8's intake valves. Build-up on the 958 V8 is generally mild and owners report little difference, so only do it when the intake is already off.

- Area: Reliability. Effort: Specialist. QLD: fine. Cost: $700–$1,400 AUD.
- US$500-1,000 at shops (≈A$700-1,400) when done as a standalone job.
- Gotcha: Only blast or soak cylinders whose valves are fully closed; otherwise there's a hydrolock risk.
- Gotcha: Walnut blasting needs a good compressor with dry air and a runner adaptor.
- Gotcha: Replace the eight intake manifold gaskets.
- Gotcha: Owners who cleaned at 60,000-115,000 miles noticed no driving difference.
- Sources: [Rennlist: DIY 958.1 CTT intake valve cleaning](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1201826-diy-958-1-ctt-intake-valves-cleaning.html), [Rennlist: Valve cleanup 4.8](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1507301-valve-cleanup-4-8-a.html), [Rennlist: Intake valves at 60,000 miles](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1333128-intake-valves-at-60-000-miles-for-those-who-are-curious.html)

### ECU tune

An OBD-flashed remap from Softronic, Fabspeed, FVD or similar. Tuners claim about +20-30 hp on the NA V8, and owners mainly notice sharper throttle and shifts. It's reversible, but several owners say it's not worth the money for power alone.

- Area: Sound and performance. Effort: Easy. QLD: fine. Cost: $1,530–$2,710 AUD.
- Softronic US$1,095-1,395 (≈A$1,530-1,950); Fabspeed XperTune A$2,709.80. A Tunezilla gearbox (TCU) tune was about US$400.
- Legality: Allowed without approval if the car still meets its ADR emissions standard. A power gain over 20% (about 62 kW on 309 kW) needs an Approved Person. Tell the insurer.
- Gotcha: The Fabspeed handheld needs a Windows PC (no Mac) and pairs with one car only.
- Gotcha: Keep a 15-25 A battery charger connected while flashing.
- Gotcha: Softronic is tuned for US 91-93 octane (roughly 95-98 RON), so use 98 in Australia.
- Gotcha: Expect a short relearn period with odd shifts or surging.
- Gotcha: Cobb doesn't support the 958.
- Gotcha: Tunes that disable rear O2 monitoring for cat deletes are emissions tampering.

### Secondary cat bypass pipes

Pipes that replace the two secondary catalytic converters for a louder V8. Not road-legal in Queensland, and owners complain about the very loud cold start and pops. Avoid.

- Area: Sound and performance. Effort: Easy. QLD: not legal. Cost: $1,590–$1,598 AUD.
- Fabspeed A$1,598.10 (claims +11 wheel hp); Soul US$1,135 (≈A$1,590); Hanksville Hot Rods US$795 new.
- Legality: They remove emission control equipment. Alternative exhausts must keep equivalent emission control, and catalytic converters may only be replaced with ADR-marked parts. Fabspeed sells them for 'closed track events and off-road use only'.
- Gotcha: Defect notice, insurance and emissions exposure.
- Gotcha: Very loud cold starts; several owners removed them.

### Sport catalytic converters

High-flow replacement cats (Cargraphic makes 958.1 GTS secondaries). A calmer alternative to bypass pipes, but there's no evidence they're ADR-compliant in Australia.

- Area: Sound and performance. Effort: Specialist. QLD: check. Cost: $2,450 AUD.
- One owner paid US$1,750 direct from Cargraphic (≈A$2,450).
- Legality: Replacement cats must carry the correct ADR markings and the car must still meet its ADR emissions standard. Treat them as non-compliant unless the supplier can show ADR 79 compliance.
- Gotcha: The owner preferred them to bypass pipes because they avoid the brutal cold start.
- Sources: [Rennlist: Sport cats installed on my 958 GTS](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/875173-sport-cats-installed-on-my-958-gts.html), [Rennlist: Cargraphic sport cats for 958.1 GTS](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/929397-cargraphic-sport-cats-for-958-1-gts-opinions.html), [TMR Vehicle Standards Information: Minor Modifications (Feb 2026)](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0)

### Cat-back exhaust

An aftermarket muffler system such as the Fabspeed Maxflo. Power gains are small, so you're paying for sound. It must still meet the noise limits.

- Area: Sound and performance. Effort: Weekend. QLD: check. Cost: $5,933 AUD.
- Fabspeed Maxflo A$5,932.77 (claims +8 wheel hp). Akrapovic slip-on price and 958.1 fitment not confirmed.
- Legality: Replacement silencers must comply with the car's noise label or ADR (certified level + 5 dB(A)), carry the manufacturer's marking and not leak.
- Gotcha: The Maxflo needs minor cutting at the factory exhaust break point.
- Gotcha: Keep valves if you want a quiet mode.
- Gotcha: Milltek's listed 958 cat-backs are Turbo-only.
- Sources: [Fabspeed Maxflo 958 S/GTS](https://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-958-s-gts-maxflo-performance-exhaust-system-2011-2014/), [TMR Vehicle Standards Information: Minor Modifications (Feb 2026)](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0), [VSB 14 Section LT (Test Procedures)](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP12_Section_LT_Test_Procedures_V2_0_1Jan2011_v3.pdf)

### USB-C charging socket

Replace a 12V socket in the cupholder area with a USB-C/USB insert for proper phone charging. The armrest USB is mainly a media interface and may not charge well.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Time: 1-2 h.
- Generic inserts are cheap (not priced). Lower-effort option: a plug-in 12V-to-USB-C adapter.
- Gotcha: One owner had to grind the OEM socket apart and trim the opening with a Dremel, so it's not fully reversible without a new socket.
- Gotcha: Reuse the OEM plug: the centre pin is 12V; the brown wire is ground.
- Gotcha: The armrest USB is 'an interface plug, not a charging plug' for one owner; another says it charges fine on a '14 GTS.
- Gotcha: A blown AUX fuse on the passenger dash panel can kill the port.
- Sources: [Rennlist: USB port not charging iPhone](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1303877-usb-port-not-charging-iphoneo.html), [Rennlist: USB port in centre console](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1459778-usb-port-in-center-console-what-can-it-do.html)

### MagSafe wireless charging mount

A 958-specific MagSafe-compatible phone mount and charger (Nine Volt), with a hidden-cable install option and no drilling. Nice daily upgrade; price not verified.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Time: 30 min-1 h.
- Price not verified (vendor site couldn't be read).
- Gotcha: Needs a 20W supply. Car USB ports can't supply enough, and the charger will cycle on and off.
- Gotcha: The console is tightly packed. One owner's 'five minute' cable run took half an hour.
- Gotcha: There's a pre-cut hole in the bottom of the cupholder cubby for the cable.
- Sources: [Dana Neibert: custom 958 MagSafe mount](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5GmeYQylGs), [Rennlist: MagSafe charger in the slot ahead of the shifter](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1228257-converted-useless-slot-in-front-of-shifter-into-apple-magsafe-phone-charger.html)

### Coding: Auto Start/Stop remembers last setting

Make Auto Start/Stop stay off once you turn it off. Owners report mixed results, and it has to be coded in several modules.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Weekend.
- Needs a coding-capable scan tool (see tools).
- Gotcha: Changing only the engine module lasts one drive cycle.
- Gotcha: One 2011 owner did it in the air-con module ('Last Mode'). A 2018 GTS owner turned it off in all relevant modules, including 'save to last' in air-con.
- Gotcha: With PIWIS it has to be coded in 4 ECUs together, or the change silently doesn't save.
- Gotcha: One UK video believed it can't be disabled at all on his Cayenne.
- Sources: [Rennlist coding guide](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1160705-cayenne-coding-the-ultimate-guide-and-discussion.html), [Rennlist: Sport Plus and A.S.S. last setting with Launch](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1489280-added-sport-plus-with-launch-x431-and-a-s-s-saved-to-last-setting.html)

### Coding: display and cabin extras

Smaller tweaks: turn on hidden PCM options (colder centre vents), hidden instrument display settings, the welcome screen logo, and auto-headlight sensitivity.

- Area: Tech. Effort: Easy. Time: 30 min.
- Needs a coding-capable scan tool (see tools).
- Gotcha: Leave the seat-belt chime alone. Disabling it blanks the Park Assist display (restored by re-enabling it), and it's a safety warning.
- Gotcha: Auto-headlight sensitivity (RLS coding) didn't stop daytime auto-on for one owner.
- Gotcha: Rear sunshades lowering in reverse was coded but didn't work.
- Sources: [Rennlist coding guide](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1160705-cayenne-coding-the-ultimate-guide-and-discussion.html)

### Drop-in air filters

BMC F1 drop-in filters for the stock airbox (a V8 needs two). There's no meaningful power gain, just a little more induction sound.

- Area: Sound and performance. Effort: Easy. QLD: fine. Cost: $265 AUD.
- Fabspeed A$264.89; Soul US$85-170.
- Legality: Allowed without approval, but they must not increase intake noise. Oiled filters can give false sensor readings.
- Gotcha: On cars with the Sound Symposer, remove the two screws on the soundaktor diaphragm rather than the hose clips.
- Sources: [Fabspeed BMC F1 filter 958 S/GTS](https://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-958-s-gts-bmc-f1-replacement-air-filter/), [Rennlist: Air filter change in GTS with Sound Symposer](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1333491-air-filter-change-in-gts-turbo-s-with-sound-symposer.html), [TMR Vehicle Standards Information: Minor Modifications (Feb 2026)](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0)

### Alcantara steering wheel retrim or replacement

If the Alcantara rim is genuinely worn through after cleaning, it can be retrimmed, swapped for an OEM GTS Alcantara wheel, or covered with a stitch-on cover. Retrim is skilled work; a cover is the cheap, reversible option.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Specialist. Time: One Macan GTS owner took about 8 hours to retrim his own wheel.
- No published Brisbane retrim prices found - get quotes. OEM GTS Alcantara wheel listed by Suncoast (SKU 958GTSALC) but price not visible.
- Gotcha: Try a proper Alcantara clean first.
- Gotcha: Stitch-on covers divide opinion on looks.
- Sources: [Rennlist Macan: DIY Alcantara wheel retrim](https://rennlist.com/forums/macan/1518011-refreshed-my-factory-alcantara-gt-sport-steering-wheel-after-45-000-km.html), [Rennlist: OEM GTS Alcantara wheel source](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1158366-991-sport-design-steering-wheel-compatibility-with-958-1-a.html)

### Headliner sag re-cover

958 headliners sag in hot climates as the foam backing breaks down; the GTS's standard Alcantara lining is less prone but costlier to redo. Re-gluing the old fabric does not work - the board has to come out and be re-covered.

- Area: Interior. Effort: Specialist.
- Mobile trimmer US$1,100 for headliner plus pillars; Porsche pre-wrapped board about US$2,500. DIY material about US$15-25 per yard (standard fabric; Alcantara far more).
- Gotcha: Do not clamp freshly glued fabric - it dimples the foam.
- Gotcha: Colour matching unusual interiors is hard.
- Gotcha: Blocked sunroof drains are one cause - check them.
- Sources: [Rennlist: 958 headliner DIY](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1410429-958-cayenne-alcantara-headliner-diy-removal-new-material-and-reinstall-with-photos.html), [Rennlist: sagging headliner causes](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1343740-sagging-headliner.html), [Rennlist: headliner costs](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1514141-headliner-sagging.html)

### Multifunction/heated steering wheel retrofit

The GTS SportDesign wheel has paddles but no buttons or heating. A newer Porsche wheel fits via an adapter (or, per one owner, a 718 clock spring) - the one retrofit with real daily payoff, but it involves the airbag.

- Area: Retrofits. Effort: Specialist. Time: One fitter reported around 30 minutes with the adapter.
- One owner's total about US$2,350: used wheel about US$1,399-1,499, adapter about US$500, airbag about US$350. GPS Adapter STMV1 listed at US$349-399.
- Gotcha: PIWIS coding may be needed.
- Gotcha: 971 Panamera wheels look similar but are not supported by the adapter.
- Gotcha: Avoid no-name Alibaba wheels.
- Gotcha: Keep the original wheel for resale.
- Sources: [GPS Adapter STMV1](https://gpsadapter.us/products/stmv1), [Rennlist: 958.1 to 958.2 wheel](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/962449-cayenne-958-steering-wheel-upgrade-958-1-to-958-2-a.html), [Rennlist: costs and sport pod](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1165842-those-with-steering-wheel-upgrades-were-you-able-to-use-the-sport-pod.html), [Rennlist: 718 clock spring OEM route](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1502726-diy-facelift-steering-wheel-on-cayenne-958-oem-solution.html)

### Skip: OEM 958.2 tail light conversion

Skip. The GTS already has tinted LED tails, and OEM facelift tails need a facelift tailgate and rear bumper, re-pinned plugs, new brackets and covers, and bodyshop fitting.

- Area: Retrofits. Effort: Specialist.
- Major bodywork; not costed.
- Gotcha: Brake and indicator pins are swapped between generations.
- Gotcha: Power tailgate needed re-teaching or programming.
- Sources: [Rennlist: rear facelift project](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1062087-cayenne-958-1-to-958-2-rear-facelift-project.html), [Rennlist: GTS tails are the tinted units](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/959175-diy-958-1-taillight-swap.html), [Porsche 2013 Cayenne GTS press text](https://www.netcarshow.com/porsche/2013-cayenne_gts/), [German Wikipedia: Porsche Cayenne (Typ 92A), 2014 facelift](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_Cayenne_(Typ_92A))

### Skip: OEM 958.2 headlight/front conversion

Skip. Facelift headlights need a new bonnet, wings and bumper plus eight under-bonnet support parts with cutting and welding; one converter could not get AFS and high beam working.

- Area: Retrofits. Effort: Specialist.
- Major bodywork; not costed.
- Gotcha: 958.1 and 958.2 headlights are not interchangeable on their own.
- Sources: [Rennlist: front facelift attempt](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1057761-cayenne-958-1-to-958-2-facelift-project-front-only.html), [German Wikipedia: Porsche Cayenne (Typ 92A), 2014 facelift](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_Cayenne_(Typ_92A))

### Skip: aftermarket matrix headlights and sequential tails

Skip. Plug-and-play 'matrix-style' headlights and 958.2-style sequential tails exist, but Rennlist owners rate OEM beam quality higher and Australian road legality is unconfirmed.

- Area: Retrofits. Effort: Easy. QLD: check.
- One owner paid about C$1,000 for a pair of aftermarket headlights.
- Legality: ADR compliance or E-marking and roadworthy acceptance not confirmed; TMR guidance could not be accessed.
- Gotcha: Keep the OEM lamps for resale.
- Gotcha: Serhan's lamps needed the supplied covers and careful seating to fit flush.
- Gotcha: Australian-delivered cars should already have amber rear indicators.
- Sources: [Rennlist: aftermarket matrix headlights](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1305758-aftermarket-matrix-headlights-for-the-cayenne-958-1-a.html), [Rennlist: aftermarket tail lights](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1282657-aftermarket-new-style-tail-lights-for-1-a.html)

### Skip: LED bulbs in OEM headlights

Skip. Owners report no dash errors with some LED bulbs, but one admits they 'aren't approved for road use'.

- Area: Retrofits. Effort: Easy. QLD: check.
- Not costed.
- Legality: Forum owner describes the bulbs as not approved for road use; not confirmed against Queensland rules.
- Sources: [Rennlist: LED bulb conversion](https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-958-2011-2018/1336520-958-porsche-cayenne-diy-led-headlight-upgrade-conversion.html)

### Queensland modification rules

- **Approval categories** Minor and basic modifications need no approval but must meet the vehicle standards. Complex modifications (engine upgrades, suspension upgrades, steering or brake replacements) need certification by an Approved Person under a Queensland-approved code. ([tmr.qld.gov.au](https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/_/media/safety/vehicle-standards-and-modifications/vehicle-modifications/queensland-road-vehicle-modification-handbook.pdf))
- **Notifying changes** Modifications that change the registration particulars must be notified to TMR within 14 days (form F3524). ([tmr.qld.gov.au](https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/safety/vehicle-standards-and-safety/vehicle-modifications))
- **Exhaust noise** For ADR 83/00 vehicles, stationary noise must not exceed the certified level by more than 5 dB(A), tested under the NTC National Stationary Exhaust Noise Test Procedure. ([infrastructure.gov.au](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP12_Section_LT_Test_Procedures_V2_0_1Jan2011_v3.pdf))
- **Replacement mufflers** Replacement silencers must comply with the car's original external noise label, the ADRs or the Vehicle Standards and Safety Regulation 2021, must carry the manufacturer's marking, and must be leak-free and adequately supported. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Catalytic converters** Catalytic converters may be replaced only with parts bearing the correct ADR markings. Alternative exhausts must keep equivalent emission control equipment, so removing cats is not permitted. ([infrastructure.gov.au](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engine_01jan2011_v3.pdf))
- **ECU remaps** Aftermarket or remapped engine computers are allowed without approval if the car still meets its ADR emissions standard. A power increase over 20% must be certified by an Approved Person. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Air filters** Replacement and pod filters are minor modifications, but they must not increase intake noise, and emission sensors must stay fitted. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Crankcase ventilation** Engine component changes must not affect gaseous emissions compliance. PCV (crankcase ventilation) has been an ADR requirement since ADR 26, so a catch can must not vent to atmosphere. ([infrastructure.gov.au](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engine_01jan2011_v3.pdf))
- **Lowering: clearance** A vehicle may be lowered provided it keeps at least 100 mm of ground clearance and meets ADR 43. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Lowering: travel** Lowering must not exceed one-third of the working suspension travel, and front and rear must be lowered by the same amount. ([infrastructure.gov.au](https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/vehicles/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/NCOP11_Section_LS_Tyres_Suspension_Steering_Nov_2015_v4.pdf))
- **Air suspension** Replacing some or all of the suspension with a non-original air or hydraulic system requires an Approved Person. Factory air suspension is original equipment. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Anti-roll bars** Replacement or additional anti-roll bars may be fitted without specific approval. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Tyre diameter** For passenger cars and soft roaders (AWD other than ADR category MC), overall diameter may be up to 15 mm larger or 26 mm smaller than any tyre the manufacturer designates for the model. MC-category vehicles may go up to 50 mm larger. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Tyre width and axles** Tyres may be no more than 1.3 times as wide as the manufacturer's widest optional tyre. Tyres on an axle must be the same size and construction, and front and rear aspect ratios must be within 10 of each other. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Tyre ratings** Load rating must be at least the placard figure. Minimum speed ratings are set by vehicle type (for example 180 km/h for a car, 140 km/h for an off-road passenger vehicle). ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Wheel spacers** Spacers or adaptors between wheels and hubs are not permitted unless supplied by the vehicle manufacturer. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Brakes** Manufacturer-optional replacement brakes may be fitted without approval. Non-standard brake upgrades need an Approved Person, and discs must not be machined beyond the reconditioning limit. ([publications.qld.gov.au](https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/vehicle-standards-information/resource/ae3044ba-8c71-4cc4-86f1-df42783a09e0))
- **Defect notices** Police or transport inspectors can issue a defect notice at a roadside check if a modification is not compliant. The vehicle must be repaired and the notice cleared; failure can lead to fines or registration cancellation. ([qld.gov.au](https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/buying/vehicleinspection/randominspection/defect))
- **Insurance** Tell your insurer about modifications (RACQ defines them to include anything that increases engine output or modifies suspension or wheels). An undeclared or illegal modification can lead to a refused claim or a cancelled policy. ([racq.com.au](https://www.racq.com.au/-/media/project/racqgroup/racq/pdf/insurance/pds/motor-vehicle-insurance/pds-racq-motor-vehicle-insurance-091224-rcmv2-1224.pdf))

## 958 Cayenne GTS questions, answered

### Which 958 Cayenne is the best one to buy?

The 2013-14 958.1 GTS. It has the last naturally aspirated V8 (the 4.8), it's past the early-958 cam-bolt faults, and nothing GTS-specific fails - its weak points are shared with the S. A 2013-14 958.1 S has the same V8 and is the value pick. A MY16 958.2 GTS is faster and newer, but its twin-turbo V6 is harder to service at home.

### What is the most common problem with the 958 Cayenne?

The transfer case: its multi-plate clutch pack binds or slips, and twelve YouTube channels and every forum stream name it the 958's weak point. The other faults rated likely on a 958.1 V8 are the glued coolant pipe letting go at the thermostat housing, air strut leaks and compressor burn-out, worn spark plugs and failing ignition coils, and heavy brake wear with ABS and pad-wear sensor loom faults.

### How often should the 958 Cayenne transfer case fluid be changed?

Porsche's schedule says 240,000 km or 16 years, but owners and specialists change it far sooner - typically every 30,000-60,000 km (Rennlist owners every 15,000-20,000 miles, PcarWise 40,000 miles, eCarGuides 120,000 km). It takes Porsche transfer case fluid 000 043 305 63, 0.875 L per the owner's manual, so buy two 850 ml bottles. The car must be level: remove the fill plug first, drain, then fill until it overflows, with two new plugs 955 301 115 01.

### What oil does the 958 GTS 4.8 V8 take, and how much?

Oil with Porsche A40 approval: SAE 0W-40 for all temperatures, or 5W-40 or 5W-50 above -25 °C. Australian examples are Mobil 1 Triple Action 0W-40 and Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4. It takes 9.0 L with a filter change (8.5 L without) per the owner's manual. There is no dipstick - read the level in the instrument cluster - so fill about 8.5 L, run it warm and top up in 0.25 L steps. Buy 10 L.

### Can you service a 958 Cayenne GTS at home?

Largely, yes. The naturally aspirated 4.8 V8 is workable from the top: oil and filter, spark plugs, ignition coils, air filters and transfer case fluid are all rated easy, and coolant, differential fluid, brakes and air struts can be done with care. The 8-speed Tiptronic fluid change needs a special tool. Leave transfer case replacement to a specialist, and walk away from a car with an oil leak from the timing chain cover.

### Does the 958 Cayenne GTS have air suspension?

Australian S and GTS cars came with air suspension as standard (option code 1BK). Elsewhere the GTS came on steel springs with PASM, with air as an option. Air strut leaks and compressor burn-out are rated likely on a 958.1, so assume it's part of the ownership cost.

### How do I find what options a 958 Cayenne has?

Look for the option sticker under the boot floor near the spare wheel and in the service book - on 958s it's hit and miss, so check both. Failing that, give the VIN to a Porsche Centre or a specialist with PIWIS and ask for the factory equipment list. The VIN itself doesn't contain the options.

### What are the 958 Cayenne option codes for PDCC, PTV Plus and Sport Chrono?

PDCC is 0AW, PTV Plus is 1Y1 and Sport Chrono is QR4. Air suspension with PASM is 1BK, and Burmester sound is 9VJ.
